How Punk Paved the way for Humanity Today

Back in the 70’s punks paved the way for the free-thinkers of society today. Without their courage to stand out and be different it’s almost certain that humanity wouldn’t have made the great leaps that it has.

Thanks to punks past and present in today’s modern society we have options, liberties and we’re able to express ourselves much more freely. Barriers have been not only torn down, they have been flattened to the ground. Labels carry far less impact and we are beginning to understand that we are all members of the HUMAN race. United in a quest to restore goodness and strength within areas of society which have become rotten and weak.

It’s no longer about rich vs poor, the haves vs the have nots. The north vs the south, the educated vs the non-educated. Men vs women. These labels have done nothing but kept us divided and stuck in the illusion that we can be defined, pigeon-holed and put into a neat box.

We are human beings, complex, creative and unique with a desire to speak up against injustice and fight for what is right. The passion of punk shouts loudly from the streets of our present reality with protests against the system, as collectively we rage against the machine that keeps on turning.

Today we witness a wave of new-era punks — but don’t expect them to be armoured with leather and studs or have their hair sculpted into mohawks. Punks by the simple definition of ‘believing in better’ are no longer in the minority but represent the majority. Today’s punks are regular people holding protest signs, community gatherings or perhaps just the simple, but inherent longing to truly be free. They’re trying to keep their small businesses afloat, they’re putting money aside to buy the kids new winter coats. They’re black, they’re white, they’re asian. They might have money in the bank or they might be skint, but they know that at the end of the day only common decency can really win.

Today’s punks are awake to the divisive tactics of the system and how it’s played the masses. The end destination for happiness never really was ‘out there’ and in the process millions rack up stifling debts in an attempt to compete with all the rest. The egoic desires for power, status, control and greed have repulsed punks since the inception of its movement. From the beginning punks have stood for non-conformity, anti-authority, anti-consumerism and never EVER selling out to the system. The power of punk has radically changed the world and continues to do so, but this time around it’s not synonymous with anger, rage and hedonism.

Punks of today are hopeful, inspired and lead with love. Their eyes and hearts are open and they’re able to see a future beyond injustice. They see a world rooted in radical integrity, riotous right action and cosmic kindness. To put it bluntly, punk is not dead — it never has been and it never will be. For as long as humans inhabit this earth there will always be the innate instinct to really, really care.
